Niederwald Monument

High above Rüdesheim, Germania watches over the Niederwald Monument

High above Rüdesheim, the imposing Germania is enthroned on the Niederwald Monument. The breathtaking panoramic view of the old town of Rüdesheim, the Rheingau, Bingen and the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley has always captivated visitors from all over the world. The impressive monument has commemorated the unification of Germany in 1871 since 1883 and, like the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz or the Hermannsdenkmal near Detmold, was built during the German Empire.

Many visitors combine their visit to the monument with a tour of the Niederwald Landscape Park. The adjacent Niederwald Temple and the visitor centre are also recommended. At the foot of the Niederwald Monument are the well-known vineyards of the Rüdesheimer Berg.

You can easily reach the gigantic monument, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002, by cable car. The valley station is located in the lively Oberstraße, not far from Drosselgasse in Rüdesheim's old town. A visit to the Niederwald Monument and Niederwald Temple is a must during your stay in Rüdesheim.
